What is Baby Shower?

A baby shower is just a simple party wherein parents or expectant parents will be able to receive gifts, from relatives, neighbors or friends, for their newborn baby or expected child. The term “baby shower” has almost the same concept as with the bridal shower than it has with actual showering or washing of babies. It is often thought of as the first shower of a baby to some especially those people who are not from United States.

Conventionally, baby shower’s main purpose is to help parents or expectant parents get necessary items for their baby or expected child such as baby clothes, baby cologne, baby powder and other necessities for the baby. Nowadays, parents hold a baby shower party for social purposes or to introduce their baby to the society, friends and neighbors especially those who have higher economic status. Such party is very popular in the United States or other countries influenced by American culture.

In the past decades, baby showers became more common, as families grow bigger in which every child need more attention. It has been a tradition that baby shower should be only held for the mother or the mother-to-be and women are the only guests to attend. However, recently, men would also like to participate since the baby or the expected child is a shower for the couple. Some families, the father is the one who organize such parties because so that the mother could concentrate on the baby or the delivery.

It was also a tradition that baby showers should only be held for the first born baby but over time, it became common for the families to host a baby shower party for all their children even to the adopted ones.

There are no standard set of guidelines on what constitutes a certain baby shower but there are common traditional games and activities that everybody could join and participate. Commonly, the maid of honor during the wedding hosts this exciting event. She is the one to send out the invitations on behalf of the parents or expectant parents. She would also be the one to look for a place where the party should be held. The good thing about this party is that it could be done somewhere else like golf courses, beaches or any other place where they could gather around.

Nowadays, baby showers have develop various themes of styles. Some prefer to hold a party after the baby is born because they believe that bringing gifts before the birth of the baby brings bad luck. And others won’t hold a party at all because they want to keep it as a private event for the family.
