The first birthday of your child is always so special. The very first little candle on their very first little cake. The pictures are great, and everyone loves to see the way the little one has grown in their first year. Many emotions and lots of effort went into your developing one-year old, and on this day you realize how precious little it was to sacrifice in order to reach this point.
The whole year, which probably now seems like it flew by, you watched as your child learned things, grew and did things that made you laugh and proud at the same time. It makes you happy to see how far your child has come in just a short span of time.
Few things compare to watching your child take its first steps. Wabbly at first, but then coming to master it in just a few tries. You can’t help but brag to all your friends about how fast the little guy picked up on it. “Just a chip off the old block”.
Not all things can be accomplished in their first year, but here are a few things that can happen:
1. They can take their first steps alone without any help. Once they realize they can do it, their independent spirit kicks in and they take off like they’ve been doing it forever. What a sight, and what a milestone for a one-year old.
2. Nothing makes you bond any more than hearing your child say “Mama”, or “Daddy”. This just melts your heart and forms a bond that can’t be broken. It changes the way you think from then on, about life in general, and about being a parent.
3. Interacting with your baby reveals a level of understanding you never thought a baby that young could possess. They’re surprisingly easy to teach, and you just explode with emotion each time they learn something that you taught them yourself.
4. When you point at things, the child has learned that you are trying to teach them something, and shows trust as they focus on what you’re trying to get across. You have their undivided attention.
5. They stop in front of the television because there’s a song on that has a good beat. You watch them bounce in rhythm with the music, and laugh as they show they can dance with the best of them.
Now all one-year olds don’t necessarily do the things mentioned above, but many do. Each child progresses in their own time. It doesn’t make one any smarter than the other, and you can base the rest of their lives on it. But they will still amaze you at what they can do at the age of one. And if you thought that was something, wait until birthday number two. They don’t call it the ‘terrible twos’ for nothing. You’ll find out who’s boss at that one!
