Appendicitis in Children – Keep Your Child Healthy

Most children have their appendix removed before celebrating their fourteenth birthday. Situated in the closed end of the large intestine otherwise known as the cecum, the appendix measures a few inches long. When it gets inflamed, a fingerlike tube grows on the lower part of the large intestine and this is known as appendicitis. Many children undergo abdominal surgery due to appendicitis. Though the appendix is not of much use to the body, its inner releases antibodies that are produced by the lymphatic tissues.

One of the most signs of appendicitis is the pain in the middle of the abdomen or the area above the belly button. Soon, the area starts swelling and there will be excruciating pain while touching the right side of the abdomen. The patient is bound to experience nausea and vomiting apart from fever as well as trouble passing gas and stools. Some people mistake appendicitis for constipation and consume laxatives or enemas. But this alleviates the risk of the appendix bursting hence it is always better to consult a doctor before taking any kind of painkiller.

If a child is experiencing any of the above symptoms he should be taken to a doctor immediately. After studying the Child’s medical history, he should also be made aware of the other symptoms as well as the timing and frequency of the bowel movements and the stools should be checked for blood and mucus. Older children can point out the painful area to the doctor while younger ones who are unable to talk will raise their knees to their chest, flex their hips and have a tender abdomen.

Though the reason for the growth of the appendix is yet unknown, it can cause some kind of block or infection in the intestine. This can be due to the thick mucus that gets built up in the appendix. This will make the stools harder and make the appendix swell. If it bursts, the infection can spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. That is why blood tests are done to check the spread of infection while urinary tests check for problems in the urinary tract. An ultrasound normally confirms the presence of appendicitis. But some children exhibit the same symptoms in case of pneumonia hence a chest x-ray is also required in this scenario. Immediate action should be taken within forty-eight hours of the pain starting.

An appendectomy is performed on the patient having appendicitis. The doctor prescribes a dose of antibiotics before surgery. If appendicitis is confined, it can be treated using antibiotics and no surgery is required since the inflammation is mild and the body is strong enough to fight the infection. But the patient should be kept under observation until stable and an appendicle perforation is done if the appendix gets ruptured. A CT scan or ultrasound determines the exact location where a drain is inserted. The wound could get infected or puss could accumulate.
