No, when it comes to big mainstream productions, whether they be sci-fi, comedy or a big fluffy romantic thing starring Reese Witherspoon, if you’ve made the call to see a big popular, flick, you know you’re buying a fantasy.

So why did ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’ make me so angry? It has all the ingredients of a delightful rom-com: a stable of classy, funny actresses (Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Brooklyn Decker and Jennifer Lopez – yes, she was funny and delightful at one point, please see the 1990s), a script by one of the writers of Legally Blonde and one of those massive ensemble casts of comedy veterans and character actors that tend to make even the worst dross palatable.

However, as I left the movie palace I remarked to my friend that as a childcare professional, I know that it’s fairly common for the stress of giving birth to cause a woman’s perineum to split in two like soft Dutch cheese. If I was offered this experience or the chance to see Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison argue about circumcising their perfect blonde children, I honestly don’t know which I would pick, I would probably have to flip a coin. Here’s why:

  1. They take out all the blood and fluids.

Now maybe you think this is a good thing. It is, after all, astonishingly rare for a mainstream movie to show childbirth in all its messy glory. The newborn babies are always handed to their mothers looking pristine, blood-free and angelically unsquished. They are also always about 3 months old. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the movie tries to pride itself on its ‘honest’ look at pregnancy. It is after all best on a self-help book designed to prepare expectant mothers for the horror/wonder of childbirth so, you’d expect there to be a small vat of the appropriate liquids on hand. They don’t even show Elizabeth Banks (the designated ‘reality of pregnancy’ mommy) urinating all over herself, which seems a missed opportunity for performer and audience alike.

  1. The film is disgusted by non-Hollywood bodies

Perhaps this is symptomatic of being directed by a heterosexual man, but you will never see so many glowy beauty shots of tawny bodies, both male and female, but particularly female. The expectant moms are never shown as anything less than perfectly honed, glorious example of the human form. Even aforementioned ‘reality hippopotamus’ Elizabeth Banks has hair that shines like the sea. Conversely, look at the treatment of Rebel Wilson, who plays a shop assistant at Banks’ pregnancy store. When she and Banks have to swop urine-soaked dresses, it is Wilson’s body that is played for big laughs: fat chick, boobs everywhere, soft cellulite speckled legs, Banks’ pee-soaked dress, obscenely too small for her…the movie wants us to find her disgusting but the fact is that for a lot of women, Wilson’s body is a lot closer to the reality of pregnancy than Elizabeth Banks and her beautiful German face.

  1. It’s got some weird daddy issues.

Seriously. Dennis Quaid, why are you in this movie? You did not just waste my valuable time with an extended golfcart drag race/metaphor for stunted masculinity, movie. That did not just happen. I am a very busy woman.
