Whether you want to draw inspiration from the way celebrities name their children, or are desperately trying to avoid celebrity’s children’s names, here’s a brief look at some brilliant, or less so, celebrity baby names.

Crazy Names

Possibly the most famous of all celebrity baby names are Bob Geldof’s children. All named after fairy-tale-type characters, Peaches, Fifi and Pixie are certainly unusual! The trend for numbers as names has risen recently with the birth of Victoria Beckham’s baby Harper Seven. But this number has been used as a baby name before; musicians Erykah Badu and Andre Benjamin also named their son Seven. So if you’re hoping to stay on top of the trend, how about Eight or Nine as baby names? Just avoid number one and two though…

Strange Names?

Celebrities have a penchant for naming their children after inanimate objects, too. Take Gwyneth Paltrow’s Apple, for instance, or tennis players Arthur Ashe and Jeanne Moutoussamy Ashe’s daughter, Camera. I actually quite like these as they’re still familiar but unique as names. Ending names with ‘a’ has been a trend for years while ‘Apple’ also has a nice resonance to it.

Taking it Too Far?

While some celebrities name their children in unusual, but rather sweet ways, (such as Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin’s daughters all given the same middle name, Rose,) others do seem to take it a step too far. Take Frank and Gail Zappa’s Moon Unit and Diva Muffin for example. To me, these sound more like joke names than names to give to your child. I admit that they’re unique, but the fact that no one else wants the name isn’t always a good thing! And don’t get me started on Shannyn Sossamon and Dallas Clayton’s baby name – Audio Science.

A trend which celebrities and the public have embraced worldwide is to name all of your children with names starting with the same letter. As long as you can think of enough names you love all starting with that letter, this can be a lovely way of giving your children continuity in their names. Take Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellan’s children for example: Rocket, Racer, Rebel, Rogue and Rhiannon.

This leads me on to the next big trend set to hit celebrity town. Names which are strong and aggressive sounding; like Rocket and Rebel, these names give the impression of someone not to be messed with, while still maintaining a fresh, unique approach to naming. Other names in this category could be: Puma, Bear, Roar or Viva.

Whatever your opinion of celebrity baby names is, you can’t deny that they’re unique!

Too Much of a Good Thing

When used appropriately mediums such as TV, and the Internet can be wonderful ways to provide entertainment and education for kids, but if not monitored and provided with time restrictions, the side effects can be unhealthy.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics children under the age of two-years shouldn’t really have any TV time, and children older than two-years of age should be limited to no more than one or two hours each day of quality, family/kid focused programming.

Time spent watching television or using the Internet should also be mixed with a healthy variety of activities such as playing with friends, participating in sports, and reading, or creating arts & crafts projects using tools such as custom rubber stamps, or traditional implements like craft paper, markers, finger paints, and water colors. Keeping kids involved in a variety of activities is important in helping them develop healthy bodies and minds.

Here’s a list of additional tips and hints for keeping TV and Internet time healthy:

Provide plenty of books, magazines, toys, board games, puzzles, etc. in the TV room, and regularly try to interest kids in a new activity.

Don’t place televisions in bedrooms – kids, or adults. Studies have shown that keeping bedrooms strictly for periods of rest can help guard against insomnia and other sleep problems.

Don’t watch TV while having meals. Family meals can be one of the best times to catch-up on the events of the day, share conversations and laughter, and create lifelong happy memories. These positive things are interrupted when the television is switched on.

Make homework time television free. Kids learn better and achieve more when they work free from distractions.

Approach time spent on TV and the Internet as something to be earned, rather than as a right, or something they might be entitled to.

Set an example through your own actions – the amount of time you spend watching TV and online shouldn’t be excessive.

Check out TV listings and reviews together to select programs that are safe for kids to watch on their own, and also programs that are great for the whole family to watch together.

Discuss what’s seen on TV and the Internet. Encourage kids to provide their thoughts, observations, and feelings, and share your own. Ask questions designed to be thought-provoking to get kids talking.

Keep the computer in family areas of the home, and make sure kids are in the room with you when using a laptop.

Discuss Internet safety and spend time online together – teach kids about appropriate behavior online.

Balance and moderation are key to all aspects of life, so make them your guide in keeping your kids activities organized, as well.

It’s no secret that families get sick. The common cold is something that everyone needs to be wary of, but children and families are specifically susceptible to illness for a number of reasons. The flu is another common issue that affects entire families, knocking them out of school and work and making a mess of their regular schedule. It can be easy, in our day-to-day lives to get tied up in all of our responsibilities and neglect the one thing that we need the most, our health. If you’re tired of yourself and your kids feeling under the weather, consider these steps to creating a healthier home and environment for your family.

Hand Hygiene

It seems appalling to most adults when a child forgets to wash their hands after using the washroom, or after playing outside in the dirt. The truth is that kids simply don’t know any better, and they need to be consistently reminded about the consequences of poor hygiene habits. Go online and search bacteria and germs that are found in dirty places, and take the time to explain and show your child a visual. By educating them to the reasons behind hand washing, you’re creating a memory that will stick out and motivate your child to stay clean. And when you can’t stop to wash your hands, such as is the case when traveling, talk anti-bacterial hand wipes with you.

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating habits should be encouraged in a child from the very beginning of their life. With persistent discussion about good and bad foods, moderation, portion size and food groups, you can create a food foundation in your child that will help them choose their meals wisely throughout their lives. Proper nutrition is extremely important for children, who are building their bodies on what they are provided. As such, it is especially important for the immune system to receive proper, balanced meals to keep your child in tip-top shape to fight off infections, and it’s never too late to begin focusing on food as a key part of your bodies’ health. If you teach healthy habits from the state, it will stick with them; at the same time, if you teach them to constantly snack and expect dessert after every meal, this will also stick with them.

Dental Health

More than ever before, health professionals are recognizing the importance of good dental hygiene in overall health of a person. Regular check-ups and cleanings should be a priority for each member in your family, keeping bacteria and cavities out of your mouths. Make brushing your teeth a fun activity by using teeth-brushing songs or rhymes to time the process and letting your children each pick out their own flavor of toothpaste.

Include your children in your own learning about healthy bodies and minds by going for walks, taking books out of the library and watching educational videos on health. Children learn prominently from what they see, instead of what their told, so get ready to lead by example!

When expecting a child for the first time, there is a very strong desire to read as much as you can about the subject. After all, most parents agree that there are few times in life that are quite as scary as those first few months when you are thrown head first into the role of protector.

Wherever there is demand for information however, among those who provide said information, there are also those who like to talk a lot without really having a clue what they are saying. This in turn leads to many parents having unrealistic expectations as to who they need to be in order to raise well adjusted children.

Here are a few myths about what it takes to be a good parent.

Good Parents Never Argue In Front of Their Children

If this myth was actually true, everybody in the world would be completely unadjusted. All children at some point see their parents arguing and allowing your child to witness you arguing actually teaches them how to deal with feelings of anger in a healthy fashion. The key is to make sure that your child always sees that you and your partner make up afterwards. When your child witnesses this they are actually learning conflict resolution and the fact that people can argue but still go on loving each other.

Good Parents Put Their Children First At All Times

While it is certainly true that your child should be your priority, other aspects of your life do still exist and at times need to be put first. Many marriages go through rocky periods due to the fact that parents start to spend all of their time worrying about their child without even a thought towards the needs of each other. Occasionally putting your marriage before your child can mean the difference between your child growing up in a happy family or the product of a divorce.

Good Parents Never Lose Control

Many articles on the subject of parenting give the impression that good parents are perfect parents. Unfortunately regardless of how good a parent you are, there will come a time when you scream at your child at the top of your voice. The key is not to make sure that this never happens but more to make sure that you apologise afterwards and explain that you love your child and did not mean it. Provided such outbursts are kept to a minimum and you always explain yourself afterwards, it does not psychologically damage your child and actually teaches him/her that you are not perfect.

Good Parents Stay at Home

There are many articles online about the dangers to your child should you decide to go back to work. There are however very few studies that agree with said dangers. If you want your child to grow into a well adjusted adult, he/she needs to know that you love them and are there for them. They do not however need you to be around twenty four hours a day regardless of any articles that suggest the contrary. Provided you make the most of the time that you are available, working and hiring a responsible baby sitter will not have any significant impact upon your child’s future well being.

Good Parents Are Friends With Their Children

Many parents have this picture perfect image in their head about parents who manage to not only raise well behaved and happy children but also manage to do so while being their child’s best friend. Although such parents do exist, most of them are found on television shows. Children make friends very easily and they do not need (or in later years, even want) you as a friend. You need to be in charge of your children and being such and being their friend at the same time is practically impossible.

Good Parents Buy Their Children Everything That They Want

Sounds silly eh? Not only is this impossible considering the amount of things that children ask for but if it were true, the children of the richest families would turn out to be the most well adjusted. While parents love to purchase their children the very best clothes and toys, all of these things should be considered extras and are by no means at the core of good parenting. Children need parents to take care of them, talk to them and offer appropriate levels of structure and discipline. Fancy sneakers really don’t even come into the equation. And the fact that your child may scream the opposite of this is equally irrelevant.

Good Parenting Comes Naturally to Good Parents

The whole parenting comes naturally thing gets thrown around on a daily basis but it is actually completely false. Every parent starts out totally clueless when it comes to how to raise kids and they only figure things out through a mixture of research, experience and trial and error(mostly the last one). The idea that you should instinctively know how to deal with the dramas of raising a child is ridiculous. Even parents raising their third child will frequently run into new situations that they have no idea how to handle and the myth that this is somehow abnormal is one that leads to a lot of unnecessary guilt.

Good Parents Always Have Well Behaved Children

Finally, many parents immediately blame themselves when they find that their children are regularly poorly behaved. This is largely down to the fact that a lot of people fail to recognise that all children are different and that anywhere from thirty to seventy percent of any child’s personality is decided before they are even born, it’s in their genes. Therefore should you find your children to be the loudest in the supermarket or your teens the drunkest at the party, remember that you are not entirely to blame. The downside of this of course is that when your child gets the highest grade in the class, that does not automatically qualify you for super parent status either.

Having a baby involves many resources which can pile up exponentially. Throughout several months, you will incur a massive amount of clothing, baby bedding, toys, baby blankets, bath, baby care and grooming items. The list goes on and on. Don’t let your closet turn into a hoarding frenzy. There are many techniques to make your nursery appear roomy and neat. You will need to plan well and find creative ways to conserve space. Here are various storage space ideas to get the most use out of your nursery.

The very first thing to do is determine what stays and what goes. If you are a pack rat like me, you tend to retain items that you don’t necessarily need at the moment, but can possibly use in the future. Don’t rationalize too much. You’ve got to let go of things you don’t need! Reducing clutter is an absolute must in the home décor world. Try giving away or selling some things. You can make some extra money and somebody else could put your items to good use. Take out your old baby checklist for nursery items and run an inventory on what you need. That may help you toss out what you don’t need.

People normally view objects horizontally, at eye-level or below. Start off arranging things vertically and take advantage of your lovely wall space. There are lots of stylish shelves, cabinets and cupboards that are great for storing small items. It is also helpful to keep items out of reach from children. You will be childproofing your home for several years so take advantage of storing things high above. Use baskets or storage containers for your shelves to conceal the clutter. If you do have containers at a lower level, place labels or pictures and train your little youngster to put things away.

Having a tall bookcase is a gem to have in your nursery. It can be a lovely décor furniture piece to make the corner of your room look like a small library. I would suggest tons of baskets or bins to store everything you can. A close friend of mine turned her bookcase horizontally, added small, custom shelves and turned her bookcase into a cubby area. A bookcase is a wonderful organizational piece that has lots of room for storage and would work well in any room. Just make sure to use fasteners to prevent the bookcase from tipping over at any time.

A toy chest is a fantastic storage space to have in your nursery. You can put linens like baby blankets, crib bedding, and so on. All of the endless amount of toys will have a happy home in their toy chest, rather than scattered all over the ground. Another excellent spot to use is under the crib or bed. It is easy to put a few storage bins under there and cover it with the dust ruffle. Find furniture which also includes storage space, like a nightstand or children’s desk with drawers. You can get the most out of your money if your furniture can serve dual purposes.

Finally, lets take a good look at your closet area. At minimum, you should already have a bar to hang the baby clothes. Take advantage of double hanging by adding an additional bar beneath the first one. Since that should only take up a few feet of vertical space, try adding more shelves. The higher up the better. You can stack several storage bins or even put a dresser in your closet. If you have a closet door, take advantage of that area in back of the door by getting a closet door rack. You can use every inch of your closet, from top to bottom for storage space.

Your nursery doesn’t have to look like a clutter bomb exploded in it. Take advantage of your nursery area and get some organizational items, make some simple installations and be prepared to make your nursery clutter-free. Take some measurements today and strategize how you want to set up your closet. You will be surprised at how many items you can actually store that will not look like an eye soar. Roll up your sleeves and get organized today!

“Is my baby normal?” “How do I deal with my teenager?” “Am I doing this right?”

As a parent, it’s common to have all these questions and so many more. There is no instruction manual that comes with raising kids, and it’s something you just have to learn about as you go along. Fortunately, there are lots of people that have done it before who can offer helpful advice and suggestions, like our parents and friends. Educated people like doctors and teachers also help us along the way with their professional opinions and experience. And just like you can find answers to just about any question you could ever have on the Internet, you can also find parenting resources online. But should you use them?

A Wealth of Information
There are innumerable websites and message boards dedicated to parenting and children. You can read about absolutely anything, from infant sleep patterns to food allergies to bullying to school to sex education and so much more. You can find articles and advice written by professionals, as well as read the opinions of other parents all over the world. Internet resources for parenting are often a place to go when you need an answer in the middle of the night, when you have an embarrassing inquiry, or when you’re simply looking for support and reassurance. For all of these things, Internet parenting resources can be incredibly helpful.

Being Cautious
However, it’s easy to get caught up in what is said online. It’s incredibly important to remember that while you should feel free to research your questions online, you should never allow the Internet to be the final say in your most critical parenting questions. For things such as nutrition, sleep, and health, you should always ask your child’s doctor or nurse. It’s okay to learn more online and use your research to help you come up with important questions. But don’t use the Internet as a substitute for a doctor’s visit. What works for one child may not work for yours, and there is certainly the possibility that you could read completely misleading or incorrect information. Getting the wrong advice could potentially harm your child. For these reasons, always get the opinion from professionals you trust and who actually know your child as an individual.

A Community of Parents
In other ways, Internet resources for parenting can be a blessing. Many people, especially single or stay-at-home moms, use the Internet as a way to connect with others they can relate to. By interacting with other parents, you are opening yourself up to new relationships and parenting points of view. Not all of your parenting questions need to be addressed by a doctor. You may find lots of helpful ideas online for the less serious things in life, such as tips on how to teach your child to tie their shoes, ideas for games to play together, or suggestions for connecting with a distant teen. The Internet can be a very helpful resource for parenting as long as you practice discretion and use your best judgment.

Terry Ford uses the internet sparingly for parenting but relies heavily on the world’s best grammar checker to polish her writing. Ms. Ford believes the best use of online resources is planning family vacations in the Bahamas.

With property prices at their lowest in decades, you may think that now is the time to move home and find a bigger and better place. However, many families are finding themselves unable to sell with the figures being so low. When expecting a new addition to the family, or simply adjusting the growing

We are all aware of how important private and personal space is to an individual within the home. Once a child reaches a certain age, they will demand their own room or space, away from younger prying eyes and childish toys. However, ensuring that every member of the family is happy can be financially and mentally challenging.

Home extensions are now regularly being used to accommodate growing families who can’t afford to move. However, this type of building work is still extremely expensive and may not suit everyone’s budget. A cheaper and more realistic option would be to convert a garden shed into an extra room for your child or children.

It is common for houses accommodating families with small children to have toys and game consoles stacked around the living room with all cupboard space taken up by children’s items. Creating a storage space in the garden that still allows for your child to play there is a great solution.

The first step is to of course remove any old or unwanted items that are currently stored in the shed. Many people will store old furniture (just in case) that is very rarely used. Transfer these things to a loft or garage, out of reach of children.

Depending on what type of equipment was stored there, the shed may require a thorough clean. Remove any mess, dust or dirt from the whole interior before applying paint. Choose a colour that is suitable on wooden surfaces, otherwise you run the risk of uneven and patchy walls.

Once the painting is complete, you are now ready to insert your furniture. All toys, books and games can be placed neatly, out of sight, in boxes and cupboards around the room. Not only will this benefit you and your home but also it will give your child or children the perfect opportunity to play in their own space without fear of outsiders. You know exactly where they are and who they’re with.

There are many options for transforming garden sheds. Workshops, music rooms or offices can all be incorporated into an individual’s garden and home. Whether it’s a place for the kids to enjoy or simply a place for you to relax, a garden shed is ideal for those who are without the money or the resources for an extension.

This is a guest post by Nicola Winters on behalf of Tiger Sheds, a leading retailer of garden sheds and log cabins.

Textbooks are VERY costly for students today. However, it is easy to save money, as long as you know how to do so. Here are a few useful tips for students, scholars and avid readers in general. 1. Plan Ahead … Continue reading →

Textbooks are VERY costly for students today. However, it is easy to save money, as long as you know how to do so. Here are a few useful tips for students, scholars and avid readers in general.

1. Plan Ahead

Talk with your instructors to see if the latest edition of a book is absolutely necessary. If only a chapter is different, maybe you can borrow someone’s book and copy that chapter, but save hundreds of dollars on purchasing an older copy. Do you need the book the first day, or can you wait a few days so that you can shop online? What classes are your friends taking? Mabe you guys can just share for the semester. Also, don’t forget about the library. This is especially true for English classes. Usually, checking a book out at a University library will allow you to keep the book for the entire semester (if not year), so just don’t lose it, and you could save TONS.

2. Go Online

First know that you should price compare on websites. There are a number of websites that allow you to do so for all the major book sellers. You can put in the ISBN, title and other information on any book you are looking for. Once this is coded in, you hit enter and the website will show you every listing for the same book on the online market currently. Make sure you double check information on anything you buy, to be sure it is the textbook you want. Next you should try shopping around on auctions. Listing on used book selling webpages are okay, but the best deals are found by playing the auction market. Many expensive books can be had for pennies on the dollar via the auction listings. These are usually higher quality books from actual book selling retailers, not just used independent sellers. A good book used is often of great quality. Again, always double check that you are dealing with a retailer of good reputation and standing.

3. It’s Classified
Next you should check the local classified ads to see if anyone is reselling their used books. If you find that no one is selling a particular textbook for a reasonable price, check for students that are reselling books on the classified ad websites. They may have highlighting, but it will be useful and not damaging. Often, these books will have little or not sign of wear at all. The students just want to make a little more money than they would be offered by their local college bookstores.

4. Down the Road
Each semester you should consider selling your used books online to make cash. You might want to sign up for an auction website or a used book webpage. As a regular reseller, you will make back more of your investment than selling them all over the place. Keep your books in good shape and you might even be able to make some real profits off of them. If you’re lucky enough to find friends in your major, ask around to see what classes people have taken. Maybe you can simply borrow books from them instead of buying new.

5. Remember
Always consider keeping your textbooks, as this is the best way to get the most value out of them, but that is up to the buyer to decide for themselves. The value of having your own reference library can be great, especially if you are going into a field that is devoted to scholarly work. No matter what, saving or reselling books is good for the planet and very green-friendly. Do not throw away those unwanted textbooks, but find someway to make use of them. Even donating them to your local library or thrift store can get you a tax break.

But what about boys? They have their own version of dress-up, too. Boys like to pretend to be cowboys, Indians, astronauts, police, and firemen.

To enhance their imaginations when playing these roles, they can dress for the part. By keeping a box of boy costumes and accessories in the playroom, you can help your son and his friends play dress-up as easily as the girls.

Buy Full Costumes

Many stores sell complete cowboy, firefighter, police officer, and other costumes for boys. Shop around and pick up some every now and then to add to your son’s collection.

He can be whatever he dreams of being on a particular day by searching for these boy costumes in his toy box. Ask him what he’d like to dress up as and pick up the outfits for holiday or birthday gifts.

Grab Pieces Here and There

Shop around thrift stores, your favorite department store, and even your own closets for pieces of costumes your son can put together to create his own dress-up outfits. Some supplies you’ll want to stock up on for him include a variety of hats, bandannas, boots, pants, shirts, and ties. Hang on to Dad’s cast-offs to add to his collection each season.

Stock Up on Accessories

When shopping for incidentals for your family, grab some extras to add to your son’s dress-up collection. You can add sunglasses, gloves, scarves, mittens, and other similar items to spark his imagination and to help him put together outfits he may not have originally thought of.

You can also buy inexpensive items in other departments, such as plastic sheriff’s badges in the toy department and small flashlights in housewares.

Use Other Items From Around Your House

Kids have wild imaginations and can create wonderful costumes from items you have laying around the house. Let them use old pillowcases for a variety of costumes by cutting arm and head holes in them.

Let your son use old towels as capes, a caveman outfit, or even a toga. Sheets are good for creating a variety of costumes, too. And don’t forget the simplest item of all: old Halloween costumes.

Keep the Costumes Clean

No matter where the items came from, you’ll want to make sure you fully clean them before your son and his friends use them. Just throw the items into the washing machine. Continue to wash them on a regular basis. If the items begin to wear and tear, you can either fix them or discard them and replace them with other items.

Have your son go through his collection every now and then to get rid of anything he doesn’t want anymore. Remove items that don’t fit him. If these items are in good condition, consider donating them to a thrift store.

The idea is to build up a collection of costumes your son and his friends can use to play their own version of dress-up, without them feeling like they’re playing a girl’s game. Let them use their imaginations to be whatever they dream of being.
